In Loving Memory

Mark Anthony Jennings was an Irish mathematician whose academic journey took him
from University College Dublin to Oxford, where he pursued his passion for
mathematics and developed a career in mathematical research.

Mark studied Mathematics at University College Dublin, graduating with First Class
Honours. During his time at UCD, his ability in mathematics was recognised with the
prestigious Hamilton Prize in 2020, an award presented to the top students in their
penultimate year of study

In September 2021, Mark continued his studies at the University of Oxford, where he became a member of Christ Church. He went on to pursue a PhD in the Mathematics of Random Systems, continuing his academic work in an area of mathematics concerned with understanding systems influenced by randomness and uncertainty.

Mark’s academic achievements were an important part of his life, but they were only one part of who he was. To the people who knew him, he was a son, friend, colleague and companion whose life extended far beyond his studies and qualifications.

Mark’s Journey
Mark’s journey from University College Dublin to Oxford reflected his dedication to mathematics and his desire to continue learning. His time at UCD provided the foundation for his academic career, while his move to Oxford allowed him to continue his research at one of the world’s most renowned universities. His success at UCD, including receiving the Hamilton Prize, demonstrated his exceptional ability in mathematics from an early stage. At Oxford, he continued to develop that interest through his doctoral research.

For those interested in Mark’s academic work, his research and publications provide a lasting record of his contribution to mathematics.

Remembering Mark
There are many different ways to remember a person. For Mark, his academic achievements provide one part of his story, but the memories of the people who knew him provide another. Friends and family remember Mark for the person he was away from lecture halls, examinations and research. His interests, conversations, humour, friendships and everyday experiences were just as much a part of his life as his academic accomplishments.

His Legacy
Mark’s academic journey took him from University College Dublin to Christ Church, Oxford, and his work in mathematics  represented years of study, curiosity and dedication.

The Hamilton Prize remains part of the record of his achievements at UCD, while his doctoral research at Oxford represents the next stage of his mathematical career.

His life was ultimately about much more than a list of qualifications or achievements. It was about the people he met, the friendships he formed, the experiences he shared and the interests that made him who he was.

Those who knew Mark are invited to contribute their own memories, photographs and
stories so that this website can become a lasting record of his life.
